Hey all-

I've read the stackpole mechwarrior books and really liked them. However, I haven't read any other authors because I have concerns over 'quality'. Can anyone recommend a book in the series that covers the current timeline (3049)?

Also, haven't the clans already invaded in ~3030? Why are there no clan mechs in game?

No, late 3049 is when they start, though by lore standards, we're not supposed to see the clans until mid-late 3050. Read all of the books, they're all canon, and don't worry about the quality. Most of the stories are above-par.

Oh, and welcome.

We are at the start or nearing the blood of kerenesky series I think. Since that covers Victors graduation and transferring to the area where the clans will eventually invade. The actual time period is "fairly" peaceful so I doubt other books cover it.

For all else browse http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Main_Page or for the timeline http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Timeline

What Kay said. There are a few books here and there that underwhelm, but I would say a vast majority are up to standard and very good. Loren L. Coleman and Stackpole are top notch, Robert Thurston was another great author.

I can't say I have read a battletech novel which I didn't enjoy

Read "Heir to the Dragon" if you can find it (either paperback or epub). It covers from the end of the 3rd Succession War to the 3040s from a Kuritan perspective. And it's a good read.

I half the first 10 books of the Dark Ages....I was not including those in my assessment...while some of those are good, they are vastly underwhelming.

And the PGI office update is absent until a certain something no longer exists..

If you have read the Warrior Trilogy by Mike Stackpole, I would highly recommend reading these books in this order:

Wolves on the Border (RN Charette) Wolf's Dragoons right before the 4th War starts.

The Grey Death Trilogy (William H Keith)
- Decision at Thunder Rift
- Mercenary Star
-Price off Glory
(The events leading up to the discovery of the Star League core, which is pivotal to future developments, and gives a good feel for life in the IS)

Heir of the Dragon (Charette) As mentioned, gives some good backstory with a kuritan perspective, and helps explain the events of the War of 3039 and the rise of the ComGuards, again pivotal to the coming storm.

Bloof of Kerensky trilogy (mike Stackpole)
-Lethal Heritage
-Blood Legacy
-Lost Destiny
The Clans invade. The Inner Sphere is nearly overwhelmed, and despite Comstar treachery, the ComGuards step in and manage to save the day. By MWO timeline, the Clans are right now marching through the deep periophery, crushing bandit king and Periphery lord alike.

the only pre-clan novel of dubious quality is the Sword and the Dagger. Fortunately, it is not really terribly important, and is too bloody expensive if you do find it.

All of Stackpole's post Invasion novels are quality, it really is only some of the peripheral ones, like Main Event, Ideal War and the Far Country that tend to be kinda "meh" and even those do still add color.

Check out the source books if you can find them as well. They are especially good in deliniating the difference between the houses.
